Certified Surgical Technologist
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
This position assists the surgical team in care of the patient in the Operating Room suites and Procedure (scope) room. Assume the responsibility for ensuring all instruments and sterile supplies are available and assembled for surgical procedure, arranging lights, and other equipment, insuring cleanliness and sterility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assists in transporting within the hospital setting.
• Maintains a sterile environment prior to and during the surgical process; carries out medical/surgical asepsis during treatments/procedures.
• Assists team members in positioning, prepping, and draping patient for surgical procedures.
• Prepares room in a timely manner with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment for each individual surgical procedure.
• Adapts procedures to meet the age specific needs of patients for treatment.
• Demonstrates competence in care of specimen and accurately handles specimens at all times.
• Accurately completes operating room counts according to policy.
• Inspects instruments prior to and during surgical procedures.
• Maintains medical and equipment supplies for use during and after operation.
• Hand instruments and supplies to surgeon; hold retractors/limbs; cuts suture, and performs other tasks as directed by surgeon during operation.
• Assists with clean-up of operating room following surgery.
• Participates in a collaborative effort with other Nursing Service staff throughout Surgical Services maintain the continuity of care of the surgical patient.
• Assists in maintaining accurate patient charges for equipment and care.
• Assists with clean-up/wrapping/re-sterilizing or disinfecting of equipment following surgery; follows written procedures for chemical/steam sterilization; knows responsibilities and the necessity for chemical and biological monitoring
• Maintains a clean environment through direct cleaning activities .according o hospital policies and professional standards.
• Participates in evaluation and monitoring of the quality of nursing care.
• Maintains responsibility for condition of equipment and supplies related to patient care. Provides for repair/restocking/replacement of supplies as needed.
• Is knowledgeable regarding own responsibilities in hospital disaster plan.
• Utilizes Standard Precautions.
• Restocks linen and supplies.
• Assists team members in transferring patient on gurney/transfer cart, protects patients’ sensitivities and right to privacy.
• Assists with orientation of new personnel as requested.
• Reports unanticipated patient response to care to physician or supervisor.
• Takes “on-call” as scheduled and able to arrive within 30 minutes.
• Knowledge of emergency carts, instruments and supplies (location and contents).
• Recognizes need for and must be able to perform CPR.

Education, Experience, and Training
a. High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) preferred.
b. Completion of Accredited Surgical Technology program or Military Training. Surgical Tech Certification preferred.
c. Experience in OR/CS is preferred.
d. BLS certified.
e. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical psycho/social, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned area. The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care may be gained through education, training, or experience.
f. Must be able to multi-task accurately and efficiently.
g. Must be able to work under stress when confronted with critical or unusual situations.
h. Must be able to work in situations requiring staying within an exact set of limits, tolerance, or standards.
i. Ability to follow instructions explicitly.
j. Must have the ability to work with associated technologies relevant to the position.
k. Must possess the ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in written form, needs and solutions with all levels of the organization.
l. Ability to define problems, collect information, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
m. Must possess valid Mandatory Reporter training for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse.
n. Must be able to read, speak, and write fluent English.
